Job Summary

The Health Professions Advisor is responsible for the supplemental academic and career advising for UT Arlington's pre-health professions student population, including, but not limited to: pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-pharmacy, pre-veterinary, pre-optometry, pre-physician assistant, pre-physical therapy and pre-occupational therapy. In addition, the Health Professions Advisor serves as the grant administrator and director of the Joint Admission Medical Program. The Health Professions Advisor also helps to administer the Texas Health Resources Pre-Medical Preceptorship Program.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Health Professions Advisor - Advises all pre-professional students (medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry, veterinary). Invite participants/vendors to Health Professions Day. Assist with Health Professions Freshmen Interest Groups (FIGs). Coordinate all aspects of students' admission files to medical, dental, pharmacy, optometry and veterinary schools. Coordinate the scholarship process for all health professions scholarship administered through the College of Science. Sponsors the Medical/Dental Preparatory Association and other health professions student organizations.
2. Chair of the Health Professions Advisory Committee - Establish and manage student Health Professions Advisor Committee (HPAC) files, prepare and electronically submit files to medical schools. Coordinate logistics for annual meeting for HPAC committee. Create and maintain files on students applying to medical and dental school. Send files to medical and dental school at student's request. Gather letters of recommendation and send packets to chosen professional schools.
3. Director of UT Arlington's Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) - Serve as the grant administrator for the JAMP program. Oversee the budget of the program. Attend statewide meetings for the program. Participate in audits directly related to the grant. Recruit students to the program. Advise students currently in the program. Monitor students' progress through the program and preparation for the MCAT. Distribute scholarship checks and summer stipends to JAMP students. Assist students in HPAC and JAMP application process. Obtain transcripts for JAMP students so academic progress can be monitored.
4. Coordinate internships and other field experiences for pre-health professions students, such as THR Pre-Medical Preceptorship Program.
5. Other duties - Assist the College of Science with Preview Days, Orientations, and Commencement. Serve as liaison with departmental advisors and faculty within the College to include assisting with grade changes. Use MyMav system to obtain information, resolve issues, run statistical reports and print transcripts for pre-health professions students. Participates in other activities as needed.



Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 2 years of experience in a related area or the equivalent experience. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills.



Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a health field or in a related science field. Knowledge of the medical and dental school application process is highly preferred.



Working Conditions

General office work and some travel required, primarily within the DFW metroplex. May occasionally work evenings and/or weekends.
